Andrew Butcher, Co-founder, Chief Executive Officer


A Colorado native, Andrew is a product of The Heinz College of Public Policy & Management at Carnegie Mellon University and The Coro Fellowship for Public Affairs in St. Louis, with an undergraduate degree from American University and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. He has worked in conservation, experiential education, community conflict resolution, renewable energy development, and organizational consulting. While at Carnegie Mellon his thesis work concentrated on community development through sustainable strategies, and he was a member of an award winning Urban Land Institute design competition.

He has consulted for multi-national NGO’s as well as assisted start-up renewable energy companies in Colorado, and continues to run a small but profitable property management business. In 2008 Andrew was awarded an Echoing Green Fellowship in social entrepreneurship. He sits on the Board of Directors for GTECH strategies, Nine Mile Watershed Association, Coro National Alumni Association and the advisory boards for Bidwell Training Center’s Horticulture Program, and The Institute for Social Innovation at Heinz College.

Chris Koch, Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer

Chris Koch is a Pennsylvania native who moved back to Pittsburgh from the West Coast with a commitment to rebuild cities and combat urban sprawl. She has a Master of Public Policy and Management from The Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon. She has professional and academic experience in the areas of Community and Economic Development, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Construction Project Management. During her graduate work, she interned at the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Department of City Planning, and the City of Tucson’s Office of Budgets and Research. For her Heinz College Masters thesis, she was part of the Greening Vacant Lots for Pittsburgh’s Sustainable Neighborhood Revitalization project in partnership with the Office of the Mayor. In 2007, she was a member of the award-winning Carnegie Mellon team for the Urban Land Institute’s Hines Urban Design Competition. While completing her Masters degree, she co-founded GTECH Strategies and currently services as the Chief Operating Officer. In 2008, she was awarded an Echoing Green Fellowship for social entrepreneurship for her work with GTECH. She received her BS in Social and Cultural History from Carnegie Mellon. She currently sits on the boards of GTECH Strategies, Grow Pittsburgh and The Midwife Center.
Matthew Ciccone, Co-Founder, Treasurer

A Pittsburgh native, Matt recently received his Masters from Carnegie Mellon's H. John Heinz School of Public Policy and Management, with a focus on sustainable urban planning and development. He also holds a Masters of Urban Design from Carnegie Mellon's Graduate School of Architecture, where he partnered with East Liberty Development Inc. to complete a thesis study examining potential public returns related to innovative urban design principles and investments. More recently, Mr. Ciccone helped lead Carnegie Mellon's award-winning entry team in the 2007 ULI Hines Urban Design Competition. Curretnly Mr. Ciccone is a Development Manager for Chapman Business Properties of Pittsburgh, PA, an award-winning Brownfield/Industrial Developer, where he serves in a leadership role for new business and sustainability. He is a member of Pittsburgh's ULI Young Leaders Steering Committee, as well as The Congress for the New Urbanism NextGen organization.

Maureen Copeland, Community Programs Associate

As a life-long resident of southwestern PA, with a background in environmental science, Maureen is committed to improving the environmental quality of her favorite city. She started her studies at Allegheny College, completing internships at a biointensive farm near York, PA, at the Ecosystem Center in Woods Hole, MA, and on a Long Term Ecological Research. Coming home after college, she joined the ’04-’05 PULSE team, interning at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank studying hunger in the area, while educating residents about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Returning to graduate school, she interned at the Environmental Management Assistance Program at the Small Business Development Center and at GTECH. After graduation, she joined the GTECH team full time, putting her environmental studies and love of the region to work.
